I have just finished catching up on last week’s People’s Playlist over at 6 Music. The People’s Playlist is a feature on Lauren Laverne’s show on the digital music station that is a compilation of listener-suggested tunes around a set theme each week. The most recent playlist was a wonderfully sonorous geographical experience featuring songs around the topic of maps, mapping, map-making, way-faring and travelling.

Over the course of 30 minutes, seven suggested songs were selected and woven together with quotes and thoughts about maps and power, – truth, – reality and their use from a range of documentaries / interviews. Certainly worth a listen (only 2 day left on iPlayer though!).

The songs that made the shortlist were:
- Do You Know The Way To San Jose – Dionne Warwick
- I’ve Been Everywhere – Johnny Cash (see accompanying website – really excellent)
- Atlas – Beth Jean Houghtom
- Map Ref 41 Degrees N 93 Degrees W – Wire
- Beyond the Sea – Bobby Darin
- America – Simon and Garfunkel
- Maps – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Any Spotify users can subscribe to the playlist here.
Good selection there I think but there must been hundreds of potential others. Perhaps Atlas Hands by Benjamin Francis Leftwich? What would you have suggested? What would you have liked to see on a Map playlist or maybe just a Geography playlist? Suggestions will be made into a publicly available playlist.
